How to Obtain an LTC or FID Card in Massachusetts

To legally possess or carry firearms in Massachusetts, you must obtain the appropriate license:

  • License to Carry (LTC): Permits the purchase, possession, and carrying of handguns, rifles, shotguns, and feeding devices.

  • Firearms Identification (FID) Card: Allows the purchase and possession of non-large capacity rifles, shotguns, and ammunition.

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

  • Age Requirements:

    • LTC Applicants: Must be at least 21 years old.

    • FID Applicants: Must be at least 18 years old, or between 14–17 years old with parental consent.

  • Additional Eligibility Criteria:

    • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.

    • A criminal background check will be conducted; certain convictions may disqualify an applicant.

Step 2: Complete a Basic Firearms Safety Course

  • All first-time applicants are required to complete a Massachusetts-approved Basic Firearms Safety Course or a Basic Hunter Education course.

  • Upon completion, you will receive a certificate, which must be submitted with your application.

Step 3: Prepare Your Application

  • Obtain the application form from your local police department or download it from the Massachusetts government website.

  • Complete the application thoroughly and gather the necessary documents:

    • Firearms Safety Course certificate.

    • Valid identification (e.g., driver's license or state ID).

    • Proof of residence (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement).

Step 4: Submit Your Application

  • Residents: Submit your completed application to the police department in the city or town where you reside.

  • Non-Residents: Submit your application to the Firearms Records Bureau.

  • Pay the required fee:

    • LTC: $100

    • FID: $100 (or $25 for applicants under 18 years old)

Step 5: Undergo Background Checks and Interview

  • The licensing authority will conduct state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and a review of mental health records.

  • An in-person interview may be required.

Step 6: Await Approval

  • The licensing authority has up to 60 days to process your application.

  • You will be notified once a decision has been made.

Step 7: Receive Your License

  • If approved, you will receive your LTC or FID card, which is valid for 6 years.

Important Considerations:

  • Always comply with Massachusetts firearm laws and regulations.

  • Renew your license before it expires to maintain legal compliance.

  • Stay informed about any changes to firearm laws that may affect your rights and responsibilities.
